A rubber tyred gantry crane does the same job as a rail-mounted gantry crane, but moves freely around the yard on rubber tyres. It needs no rails and no rail foundations, so it works on temporary sites, across several yards or where the ground does not allow runways. It lifts 10–800 t, depending on the version, and the structure, lifting attachment, steering and drive are chosen to suit the job.
It comes in four versions. The electric single girder version, 10–25 t, and the electric double girder version, 10–100 t, are powered by a diesel generator or batteries. The hydraulic version, 10–500 t, has high torque and works well on difficult ground and where there is no power grid. The straddle carrier version, 50–900 t, has full hydraulic transmission and PLC control, for motorway, railway and metro projects.

The crane stands on four or more rubber-tyred wheels, each with its own drive and steering. The operator chooses the steering mode: Ackermann for truck-like turns, crab for diagonal travel, pivot for turning on the spot, or 90° lateral travel to move in between stacks. The trolley on the girder lifts the load, while hydraulic outriggers and wind anchors give it, when working, the stability of a rail-mounted crane.
No rails and no rail foundations, so site costs drop and the crane can be moved to another yard.

For loads up to 25 t and long spans, choose the electric single girder version, and up to 100 t the electric double girder version. Above 100 t, on rough ground or without a power grid, the hydraulic version. For bridge girders and very large elements of 50–900 t, the straddle carrier version. Choose the power supply for the site: diesel on construction sites, batteries where noise and emissions matter, hybrid in ports.
