A slipway winch hauls ships out of the water up the inclined slipway, for maintenance and repairs, and lowers them back into the water. The complete system includes the friction winch, pulley blocks to multiply the force, wire rope slings and, depending on the method, marine airbags or rail trolleys. Slipway winches have a rated load of 10–100 t, a speed of 5–20 m/min and drums for 20–5000 m of rope.
The ship is hauled in two ways. With marine airbags, inflated bags are placed under the hull, lift it and reduce friction, and the winch rolls the ship smoothly on them towards the dock or the water. This method reduces resistance and suits large vessels in particular. With rail trolleys, the ship rests on a trolley that runs on a rail track, connected to the winch by rope or chain. This method is simple, precise and suited to small and medium vessels.

The friction winch pulls the rope by wrapping it around grooved drums, so the rope does not pile up in layers on the drum and the force stays the same over the whole haul. Pulley blocks multiply the winch force, and wire rope slings attach to the ship or the trolley. On airbags, the winch rolls the ship over the inflated bags, and on trolleys it pulls it along the rails, with precise position control. For launching, the winch pays out the rope under control and the ship moves slowly down to the water.

It is used in shipyards and ports with slipways, for maintaining, repairing and launching ships, at dry docks and anywhere ships are hauled ashore, towed, docked and maintained. A 60 t friction slipway system with a 2000 m drum and 44 mm rope works in a shipyard for ship maintenance, repair and launching.
For large vessels choose marine airbags, which give buoyancy and smooth sliding, and for small and medium vessels choose rail trolleys, with more precise control. Airbags work in all water conditions and cost more up front, but pay back with large vessels and long-term use. Trolleys need a rail track, which limits them on some sites, but cost less for short-term needs. Choose the winch load for the weight of the largest ship and the slope of the slipway.
