and a surprise niche that saved the business.

Robert and his wife worked for 9 years in Italy. They decided to come home with a business of their own. The cardboard packaging workshop was the starting point. The commercial breakthrough came from an unexpected niche discovered in the first months of production: custom UV-printed tiles. The total €61,000 investment was covered by 200,000 lei non-refundable through Start-Up Nation plus their own co-financing, for a turnkey workshop with 5 machines and 6 revenue sources.

02 / The starting point · the family wanted home

It wasn't about packaging. It was about how a family comes home with a business of its own.

Robert and his wife worked for 9 years in Italy. The decision came firmly: a return to Romania with a business of their own, to put down roots again. Custom cardboard packaging seemed a logical start, observing that the large factories refused small orders, while the market for artisan products and e-commerce needed personalized boxes in runs of dozens, not tens of thousands.

The first consultant he turned to confirmed the general costs and sent him to find his own importers and machines. Two months online searching, with no one to explain what technology goes with what, what flow connects 5 machines in a 2-person workshop, what runs are viable on each technology.

The real question wasn't "what machines do I buy", but "how do I build a workshop that works with 2 people and diversifies the risk across several segments". The wrong call that led to UZINEX came at that moment.

Through a simple wrong number, I reached you. And you started to explain to me. I had no idea, I was completely clueless about machines, how they work, what they do."

03 / The solution · a €61,000 full-option workshop

Five machines that, together, open six different niches from the same workshop.

UV flatbed printer
2×3-metre table · prints cardboard, ceramics, plexiglass, wood, glass, coated metal · polymerized UV inks
Industrial cutter
2×3-metre table · automatic feed · oscillating knife for cutting boxes with no die · laser technology for precise cut positioning and sheet alignment
Engraving laser
a separate machine for engraving wood, acrylic, leather · plaques, stamps, decorative · not used for cutting cardboard
Banner plotter
large format · banners for events, retail, exhibitions
Gluing machine
semi-automatic · folder-gluer for 4-corner / crash-lock folding boxes
Finishing
laminator · perforation · die-cutting · accessories for premium boxes
Digitalization package
packaging-design software · CAD for standard and custom boxes

The complete configuration was sized for maximum flexibility, not for a single product. Each machine can contribute to several categories, and the redundancy of capabilities was intentional.

04 / The workshop flow · five hybrid stations

Five stations, two operators, six completely different products from the same flow.

The MDG Goldpaper workshop isn't a series production line. It's a hybrid flow with 5 technological stations where the same order — whether 30 e-commerce boxes, 50 custom ceramic plates or 10 banners for an event — goes from raw material to finished product without changing the workshop.

The operational key is the absence of a die. The UV flatbed and the laser work directly from the digital drawing. Zero setup, under 30 minutes for a new design, compared with 12 hours at die-cut-based workshops. For a 2-person workshop, that means half a day of preparation work disappears, and the time is redirected to actual production.

05 / Strategic leap · small runs with UV + laser

From a 50,000-piece minimum to a 5-piece minimum. The niche the competition can't reach.

Traditional workshops with a die-cut press have a minimum threshold somewhere between 10,000 and 50,000 boxes of the same design. Changing the die takes ~12 hours, and the die costs between €800 and €2,500 per set. That economy makes the maths impossible for a small firm wanting 30 boxes for a product launch.

MDG Goldpaper accepts orders from 5 custom boxes thanks to the combination of the UV flatbed plus the oscillating-knife industrial cutter. No die, no mechanical setup, just a digital file sent to the queue. The laser technology integrated into the cutter ensures the precise positioning of the cuts on the sheet. For small firms at launch, artisan-product agencies, marketers with limited campaigns, that's the only viable offer on the local market.

I can do even 5 boxes, I can also do 10 boxes. Other firms can't do this. They'd have to change dies, set up a whole 12-hour affair. And I can afford this."

A

A wrong call · January 2023 · a technical conference

A quote from Robert: "Through a simple wrong number, I reached you." The conversation started technical, with no commercial filters. We explained the technologies, what packaging sells on the market, what flow connects 5 machines in a 2-person workshop. For an entrepreneur clueless about machines, that was the first time the project took real shape.

B

Business plan included · the bank amazed

We prepared the Start-Up Nation file and the business plan for the bank at no consultancy cost, because ordering the equipment is our source of revenue. At the bank, the officer asked three times who had made the plan. The market standard was €5,000 for a similar plan.

C

Digital cutter · instead of a die-cut press

The classic solution for cardboard boxes is the die-cut press. Costly, slow, viable only on large runs. We recommended an oscillating-knife industrial cutter with automatic feed, plus laser technology for precise positioning. No die, no mechanical setup. That was the key that made the "I'll take even 5 custom boxes" strategy possible, plus opening the UV tiles niche.

The family returns from Italy after 9 years

Robert and his wife worked for 9 years in Italy. They decided to return to Romania with a business of their own, to put down roots again. The idea of a corrugated-cardboard packaging workshop came from the observation that the custom-print market was dominated by large factories that refused small runs.

Business plan included, free · the bank amazed

For the Start-Up Nation application, the technical file and the business plan were prepared together at no consultancy cost. At the bank, the credit officer asked two or three times who had made the plan, because the market standard was €5,000 for a similar plan. UZINEX discussed the technical documentation directly with the bank, without burdening Robert with the mediation.

    Technology recommendation

Industrial cutter with an oscillating knife · large-format UV flatbed

For cutting corrugated cardboard, the classic solution is the die-cut press with a die — large and costly, requiring at least 12 hours to change the design. The UZINEX team recommended instead an industrial cutter with automatic feed and an oscillating knife, plus integrated laser technology for the precise positioning of the cuts. No die, no mechanical setup, just a digital file. That was the key that made the "I'll take even 5 custom boxes" strategy possible. For printing, a UV flatbed 2×3m, a model rare in Romania at the time.

  6. 06
    Logistical delays · 2023

    International conflicts, delayed delivery

The order coincided with a tense period for international transport, similar to the situation at Limanu. Unplanned delays appeared in the equipment delivery. We kept in constant contact, adjusted the expected flow and prepared the installation for the exact moment the machines arrived.

  7. 07
    Commissioning · 2023

Space renovations, the first orders from the start

Robert renovated the space per the guidance received, including the flooring and dust control, essential for a paper and cardboard workshop. The workshop entered production as soon as the last machine was calibrated, with the first orders from his personal network already waiting. The business model was validated by the market from the first months.

09 / Bonus story · the surprise niche

The cardboard-box workshop that won on custom tiles.

The workshop was designed for cardboard packaging. The UV flatbed was chosen because it prints directly on cardboard, with no transfer. What Robert didn't know at the time of purchase: the same printer prints just as well on ceramic substrates, plexiglass, wood, glass, leather and coated metal.

In the first months of production, after a few tests on tiles, Robert discovered a niche with no direct competition in Romania: custom ceramic plates, photo mosaics for residential projects, logo tiles for HoReCa, decorative walls for commercial spaces. The margin on printed ceramics is typically 40-55%, significantly above that on standard cardboard boxes.

The lesson for anyone opening a print workshop: size the machines for maximum versatility, let the market tell you which niche pays best. Diversifying across 6 categories reduces dependence on a single segment and protects the workshop from seasonal shocks.

12 / Lessons & challenges

What we learned from
delivering a multimedia workshop built from scratch.

Four observations that changed the way we propose print workshops for first-time entrepreneurs.

Lesson 1 / 4

Unexpected niches discovered from the machines' versatility

The workshop was sized for cardboard packaging. The business breakthrough came from an unexpected niche: custom UV-printed tiles. Because the UV flatbed prints on any rigid substrate, plus the laser cuts both cardboard and plexiglass, the workshop turned into 6 revenue sources with the same set of 5 machines. The lesson: size the machines for maximum flexibility, not for a single product. The market will then show what works best.

Lesson 2 / 4

Flow consultancy matters more than the equipment catalogue

The first consultant sent Robert to find his own importers. He lost 2 months. The difference we made wasn't a list of equipment, but the technological education: why a laser instead of a die, why UV on a rigid substrate, what logical flow connects 5 machines in a 2-person workshop. For an entrepreneur with no technical background, that's the difference between launch and abandonment.

Lesson 3 / 4

The business plan is part of the package, not a separate cost

The standard bank requires a business plan for any investment credit. Consultants bill €3,000-5,000 for it. For a client who orders the equipment from us, the plan is included, because we already have all the technical and financial data to build it correctly. The credit officer in the testimonial asked three times who had made the plan, which is explicit feedback about quality.

Lesson 4 / 4

Non-technical details matter: the flooring and the dust

At a paper and cardboard workshop, dust control isn't cosmetic, it's operational. Too much dust means bad print, clogged UV heads, scrap. We advised Robert on the flooring, environment control, hygiene too. That doesn't appear in the equipment catalogue, but it's the difference between a workshop that produces and one that struggles.

13 / Frequently asked questions · custom print workshop

What equipment makes up a complete custom-print workshop of €61,000?

+

A UV flatbed printer with a 2×3-metre table (prints on cardboard, plexiglass, wood, ceramics, glass, coated metal), an industrial cutter with automatic feed and a 2×3-metre table for cutting boxes with an oscillating knife and laser technology for precise positioning, a separate engraving laser for wood, acrylic and leather, a large-format banner plotter, a semi-automatic gluing machine for boxes, a laminator, perforation, die-cutting, plus a digitalization package with packaging-design software. The configuration covers 6 product categories from the same workshop: custom cardboard boxes, custom tiles, banners, light boxes, pens/objects, engraving.

Why an oscillating-knife industrial cutter instead of a die-cut press for cardboard boxes?

+

The die-cut press with a die is efficient on very large runs, starting from 10,000-50,000 pieces of the same design. Changing the die takes around 12 hours. The die cost varies between €800 and €2,500. The oscillating-knife industrial cutter cuts the cardboard from a digital drawing, with no die, no mechanical setup. The integrated laser technology ensures the precise positioning of the cuts on the sheet. This way, the workshop can accept orders of 5 or 10 custom boxes, impossible with the die because the die cost would consume the whole margin. For a new workshop wanting to enter the small-runs market (e-commerce, artisan products, premium cosmetics), the digital cutter is the correct choice.

What's so special about the large-format UV flatbed printer?

+

A UV flatbed printer with a 2×3-metre table prints directly on rigid substrates, with no transfer, no sublimation, no heat application. That means it can print on cardboard, plexiglass, wood, ceramics (tiles), glass, coated metal, leather and rigid plastic. The UV inks polymerize instantly under UV light, becoming permanent, resistant to scratches, sun and humidity. At the time of delivery to MDG Goldpaper, only 1-2 similar printers were operating commercially in Romania. This is the technology that opened the custom tiles niche, unexpected but very profitable.

How long did preparing the Start-Up Nation file for MDG Goldpaper take?

+

Preparing the technical file, the equipment justification, the business plan and the documentation for the bank were done together with the UZINEX team, at no consultancy cost, because the client ordered the equipment from us. The process spanned a few months, in parallel with the search for the space. For formal approval, we had direct interaction with the bank for technical clarifications, to exclude Robert from the mediation. The policy is standard for our clients: if the machines come from us, the funding assistance is included at no cost.

How did tiles become the workshop's main product?

+

The workshop was initially designed for cardboard packaging. Because the UV flatbed printer accepts rigid substrates of any type, Robert tested printing on tiles, a niche with no direct competition in Romania at the time. Custom ceramic plates, photo mosaics, logo tiles for residential and HoReCa projects — all became a product with a high margin and low competition. The lesson for anyone planning a print workshop: size the machines for maximum versatility, let the market tell you which niche pays best. Diversifying across 6 product categories reduces dependence on a single segment and protects the workshop from seasonal shocks.

What is the difference between the consultancy received from the first consultant and from UZINEX?

+

The first consultant confirmed the general costs and sent Robert to find his own importers and machines. Two months of online searching with no clear result. The UZINEX team approached the problem the other way around: it explained the compatible technologies, what flow connects the machines in a small workshop, what minimum runs are viable on each technology and what products sell best on the local market. For an entrepreneur with no technical background, the difference is between a price list and an operational business plan. A quote from the testimonial: "You guided me on what technologies to choose, what packaging to produce, what would work better on the market."

How does the total investment of €61,000 for the MDG Goldpaper workshop break down?

+

The total investment in equipment was €61,000. The Start-Up Nation scheme covers a maximum of 200,000 lei non-refundable per beneficiary, which is around €40,000 at an indicative rate. The difference of around €21,000 was the client's own co-financing, supported through a bank credit for co-financing. For the co-financing credit, we prepared the business plan directly with the bank, at no consultancy cost, which accelerated the approval process and reduced the stress on the founder.

How critical was the post-delivery technical support for the MDG workshop?

+

For a new workshop with a founder who has no technical background, a machine breaking down on a day with big orders means a direct loss. The UZINEX team offered technical support on a direct channel, with no call-center, including on flow optimization in the first months of production. A quote from Robert: "You come with the newest machines on the market and, on top of that, completely free, you give ideas, you support them. That is, you really offer free consultancy. I think that helps you the most and I really recommend it."
