Sorin Grindei works in applied geology. In the '90s he roams the Moldova region and identifies in Botoșani County a deposit of fine limestone with a uniform grain, no large inclusions, and a density that allows ornamental-quality polishing. Geologically, the material meets every criterion for countertops, monuments and premium façades.
He opens his own quarry in 2005 with a precise plan: ornamental stone, the segment with the maximum margin per tonne processed. Except the Romanian market of 2005 was barely emerging from the utilitarian construction of the '90s. Demand for premium countertops, sculpted monuments or fine-limestone façades was marginal, and the willingness to pay didn't cover the cost of processing.
The pivot was forced by the reality of the market. Sorin sells crushed stone for embankments, foundations and agreed roads — the exact opposite of the original dream. 19 years of commercial patience, selling the lowest value-added a fine limestone can have, with the ornamental dream deferred but not abandoned.

Sorin Grindei didn't evaluate other suppliers. Unlike most of our projects, the Geo-Ex Construct order came on the basis of a pre-existing professional relationship built up in a completely different project.
In the years before the Geo-Ex factory, Sorin Baciu of UZINEX was working on the CAMMA Tehno Metal project in Buzău — Romania's first semi-dry hyper-pressed modular-brick factory. The critical technical challenge was adapting the concrete chemistry recipe to the local clay in Buzău, mineralogically different from the clays the recipe had been proven on in other countries.
Sorin Grindei, a geologist with direct expertise in the region's sedimentary rocks, helped us transfer the recipe free of charge. The exchange was one of pure technical knowledge, based on mutual professional respect — not a commercial transaction.
A few years later, when his 19-year dream was ready to be realized and the market finally demanded it, Sorin called directly. No multiple quote requests, no comparative evaluation, no aggressive price negotiation. Local technical support, know-how on reliable equipment, trust demonstrated in the previous project — those were enough of a differentiator for him.
Boulder-cutting machine · custom pilot project
The engineering challenge: a raw quarry boulder has an irregular shape, a concave surface, unpredictable dimensions. No series manufacturer delivers a machine that can clamp it stably and cut it into slabs of constant thickness. Together with Sorin Grindei we designed a pilot device — adaptive clamping, disc guidance, recirculated-water cooling — that cuts irregular boulders into slabs usable for the next step. Without this pilot, the rest of the factory would have had no processable raw material.
3-axis CNC with 7 kW spindle · «a monster»
To machine the slabs into countertops, monuments, steps and architectural elements, we delivered a 3-axis gantry CNC with a 3 × 1.5 m working bed. The differentiator isn't kinematic complexity — 3 axes are enough for 95% of Sorin's orders — but the 7 kW spindle, oversized for the segment's standard. On limestone and granite a small spindle wears out fast and loses precision. The 7 kW spindle holds its speed under load throughout the daily operating hours, year after year. Sorin calls it «a monster of a spindle».

The public ANSPC figures confirm the transformation. At the time the equipment was delivered in 2022, Geo-Ex Construct reported 2,131,730 lei in turnover. Two years later, in 2024, the figure had climbed to 5,833,014 lei — a ×2.74 multiplication. No EU financing, no leasing, only aggressive reinvestment from own profit. The factory wasn't an expense — it was an operational lever that transformed the company's economic profile in a single fiscal cycle.
The equipment was delivered as an integrated package in 2022, plus a dedicated CAD/CAM station plus a water-treatment system with recirculation and a settling tank for machine cooling and process-water control.

The market's standard model separates the functions along the value chain. The operator sells boulders to the slab processor. The processor sells slabs to the finishing workshop. The workshop sells the finished product to the contractor. Why a custom pilot project for cutting boulders and not a series machine?

Series machines for cutting stone are designed for prismatic blocks — parallel faces, reproducible dimensions, stable support on a fixed bench. The boulders from Sorin's quarry have an irregular shape, an unpredictable concave-convex surface and a variable volume. On such input, a series cutter with static clamping cannot maintain slab thickness or loses stability during the cut. The solution was a pilot machine designed around the reality of the material: adaptive clamping that takes up the irregular shape, disc guidance with adjustable spacing, continuous recirculated-water cooling. The investment in custom design unlocked the use of the own quarry without the preliminary step of pre-formatting the blocks.
Why a 3-axis CNC and not a 5-axis one for a stone-processing factory?

The standard question in the industry. The technical answer: 3 axes cover 95% of the real orders of a workshop making countertops, monuments, steps and typical architectural elements. Perimeter contouring, depth milling, sculpting decorative profiles on horizontal planes — all are 3-axis. The 5 axes become necessary only for complex 3D sculptures or for sinks sculpted from a single block with curved interior walls. A 3-axis CNC is 3-5 times cheaper than the 5-axis equivalent, has simplified maintenance, and operator learning is much faster. For the Geo-Ex profile, 3 axes is the correct engineering choice, not a compromise. When a 3D order comes up, it can be subcontracted on a one-off basis or executed manually by stonemasons.
Why does the 7 kW spindle matter, and not the standard 3-4 kW?

On natural stone — limestone, granite, marble — the load during cutting with a diamond bit is permanent, not intermittent. An under-sized spindle (3-4 kW) enters speed loss under load, and speed loss leads to three consequences: degraded surface quality, accelerated wear of the diamond tool, thermal overloading of the spindle itself. Over a year, that translates into frequent spindle replacements and productivity losses. A 7 kW spindle holds a constant speed under real load, preserving precision and extending the life of the entire tool set. For a workshop that works 8-10 hours a day, year after year, oversizing the spindle is an economic calculation, not a technical luxury.
Is the limestone from the own quarry really «ornamental quality» or is it standard limestone?

The difference between industrial limestone and ornamental limestone is geological, not marketing. Ornamental limestone requires a fine uniform grain, the absence of large iron or clay inclusions, a constant natural colour over a large volume and sufficient density for fine polishing. Most limestone operations in Romania extract rock for lime, cement or aggregates — meaning they don't pass the aesthetic and stability tests required for countertops or architectural elements. Sorin Grindei's quarry, identified by an engineer as far back as 2005, contains a fine limestone that meets the ornamental criteria. That's why his 2005 dream was geologically valid — it was just waiting for the market to mature.
