A strategic pivot to clean sheet
with a 6 kW fiber laser and free funding consultancy.

Marian has done metal fabrication for several years in Pitești. He sells gates, railings, outdoor furniture and custom decor directly to end clients. He observed that the "clean sheet" niche is going mainstream and decided to transform his workshop towards this segment with a Start-Up Nation 2022 investment in three UZINEX machines: a 6 kW economy fiber laser for cutting, a laser welding machine for fine beads, plus a digitalization package. For a B2C workshop, the clean laser edge isn't a technical parameter, it's an immediate selling point.

02 / The starting point · the pivot to clean sheet

In B2C, the client sees the product edge directly. The finish can't be negotiated down.

Marian observes a clear trend on the local Argeș market: end clients — homeowners, architects and designers — increasingly demand metal products with a clean finish, no traces of manual grinding or visible burr. The "clean sheet" aesthetic is no longer premium, it's becoming standard.

His metal-fabrication workshop had old machines that couldn't keep up with this requirement. Cutting with an abrasive disc and conventional welding produced edges and beads that required extra manual processing, doubling the execution time and limiting the type of orders he could accept.

The question wasn't how the workshop grows, but how it changes the product profile it sells. The Facebook ad about Start-Up Nation came at the right moment. The call followed the same day, the video conference the next.

Doing metal fabrication and seeing that clean sheet is very much in demand, I decided to buy a laser.

03 / How we came to deliver · honest
A

They researched themselves · a direct call

Marian saw a Facebook ad about Start-Up Nation funds. He called immediately, we set up the video conference for the next day. The conversation started technical, with no commercial filters, under the real pressure of a workshop that wanted to pivot to the clean-sheet niche.

B

The best on the market · on price and quality

A direct quote from the testimonial: "On price and quality ratio, they were the best price and the best quality on the market." For a small workshop with a limited budget after the own contribution from Start-Up Nation, the quality-price ratio was decisive. The 6 kW economy configuration reduces the cost without sacrificing edge quality.

C

Free funding consultancy + technical support

On projects where we deliver the equipment, the Start-Up Nation file is included at no cost. At Geomar, as at Fier-Forjat Limanu (both 2022 applications), we prepared the technical file together. Plus ongoing post-delivery technical support on a direct channel, no call-center.

04 / Equipment delivered · 3 key machines for the B2C pivot

A minimum viable configuration for a B2C workshop with finishing standards.

Economy fiber laser
6 kW · cutting stainless / aluminium / steel sheet · 0.5–8 mm thick
Laser welding machine
fine beads on stainless and aluminium · minimal heat-affected zone
Digitalization package
industrial software for designing metal elements · integrated with the laser
Flow type
hybrid · automated on cutting, manual on welding and assembly
Operators per shift
2 people · Marian plus a second operator
Typical materials
stainless AISI 304 · aluminium 5xxx series · construction steel

The economy configuration reduces the machine cost without sacrificing edge quality on the typical Geomar range of 1–4 mm thick. For Marian's workshop, that means complete coverage of the B2C requirements at a machine cost under half of the industrial variant.

05 / The workshop flow · from request to delivered product

Five steps from a direct request to a custom product delivered to the end client.

The Geomar workshop receives the request directly from the end client. Marian or his colleague quickly draws it in the software, generates the cutting file, starts the laser, welds the parts with laser welding and delivers the product with no extra finishing. The flow is artisan on assembly, but semi-automated on cutting and welding.

For a B2C workshop with small volumes, the speed from request to commercial confirmation directly affects the conversion rate. The digitalization package closed the loop between technical capability and commercial agility.

Six product categories that previously required manual finishing.

After installing the laser, Marian can accept orders that require a clean visible edge: gates with decorative patterns, interior railings with fine details, outdoor stainless-steel furniture, architectural decor, ornamental replicas and one-off orders. All had a hidden cost before: the manual grinding time for each element.

The pivot isn't a volume increase in the same range, it's a change in the types of orders the workshop accepts. That opens new client segments with a higher willingness to pay for products with a premium finish.

  1. 01
    Initial call · 2022

A Facebook ad and a conversation about Start-Up Nation

Marian saw a Facebook ad about Start-Up Nation funds. He had run his metal-fabrication workshop for several years, but his machines couldn't keep up with the finishing requirements of direct clients. He called, we set up a video conference, checked eligibility on the CAEN codes and identified the key machines: a 6 kW economy fiber laser, laser welding and a digitalization package.

  2. 02
    Funding consultancy · 2022

The Start-Up Nation file prepared with no consultancy cost

As with Fier-Forjat Limanu, we prepared the technical file for the Start-Up Nation application together: equipment justification, implementation plan, itemized budget. The policy is standard for clients who order the equipment from us: if we work together on the machines, the funding assistance is included at no cost.

  3. 03
    Approval and waiting

The funding process took longer than planned

The Start-Up Nation process followed the program's standard pace. Meanwhile we kept in touch with Marian, adjusted the technical offer and prepared the delivery for the moment of disbursement. For a B2C workshop with modest volumes, staying close during the waiting period was critical.

  4. 04
    Delivery · 2023

Three key machines for the pivot to clean sheet

The order included a 6 kW economy fiber laser for cutting, a laser welding machine for fine beads on stainless and aluminium, plus a digitalization package with industrial software for designing metal elements. The sizing was done for the real profile of the Geomar workshop: small batches, one-off orders, visible finish.

  5. 05
    Commissioning and production

An immediate pivot to orders with a fair-faced finish

After commissioning, Marian could accept orders he no longer accepted before: gates with decorative patterns, interior railings with visible edges, outdoor stainless-steel furniture. In B2C, the client sees the product directly, and the clean laser edge is an immediate selling point. The business pivot was fast and concrete.

10 / Bonus story · the ongoing relationship

The next step · an electrostatic paint line in preparation.

After the workshop entered stable production on the new "clean sheet" niche, Marian identified the next stage: the final painting of products destined for outdoors. Gates, outdoor railings, garden furniture — all require a durable protective finish against the weather.

The electrostatic paint line we're set to deliver will close the workshop's capability. Geomar will become a complete workshop from raw material to a finished product ready to install, with no dependence on external subcontractors for finishing.

For us it's validation that the relationship continues naturally, each next investment building on what we delivered before. Marian is today more than a client, he's a partner on the growth path.

11 / Testimonial · excerpts from the video interview

I bought this laser so I could expand. Doing metal fabrication and seeing that clean sheet is very much in demand, I decided to buy a laser for the products I want to support.

Laser welding on stainless is something else, it's a completely different thing. The quality of the machines is undeniable — the samples say it all.

On price and quality ratio, they were the best price and the best quality on the market. We got along well and we're satisfied.

12 / Lessons & challenges

What we learned from
delivering a local B2C workshop.

Two observations that changed the way we propose small workshops with direct sales to end clients.

Lesson 1 / 2

In B2C, the visible cut edge is an immediate selling point

For a workshop that sells directly to the end client, the product edge is visible and the finish can't be negotiated down. Cutting with an abrasive disc or plasma requires extra processing for the product to look presentable. The fiber laser delivers clean sheet straight from the machine, which means Marian can accept orders he would otherwise have refused for lack of finishing time.

Lesson 2 / 2

The digitalization package is the difference between an order won and an order lost

The industrial software for designing metal elements lets the workshop quickly turn a client request into a laser-cuttable file. For B2C, the speed from request to confirmation matters. At Geomar, digitalization was the piece that closed the loop between technical capability and commercial agility.

13 / Frequently asked questions · B2C workshop with a fiber laser

What exactly does "clean sheet" mean and why does it matter for a B2C workshop?

+

Clean sheet is the term used colloquially for cuts with a smooth edge, no burr, no oxidation, no traces of manual finishing. It's achieved with precision thermal methods such as the fiber laser or with cold methods such as waterjet. For a B2C workshop, the importance is direct: the end client sees the product edge in their home, on their fence, on their railing. If the edge is clean, the product looks professional with no extra processing. If the edge has burr or oxidation, the workshop has to grind each element by hand, which doubles the execution time and reduces the margin.

Why a 6 kW economy fiber laser and not a more powerful or cheaper variant?

+

The 6 kW economy configuration is optimal for a B2C workshop with modest volumes. Below 6 kW, you have limitations on thicknesses over 5–6 mm on stainless. Above 6 kW, you pay for extra power that a small workshop doesn't use often, plus higher consumption of electricity and assist gas. The economy configuration reduces the machine cost without sacrificing edge quality on the typical Geomar product range of 1–4 mm thick.

How does the free funding assistance you offer on Start-Up Nation work?

+

For projects where we deliver the equipment, the funding-file consultancy is included at no additional cost. We help identify the right program, prepare the technical part of the file with specifications, justifications, an implementation plan and an itemized budget, then hand it to the accredited consultant who submits the application. The policy is standard for clients who order the equipment from us. At Geomar and Fier-Forjat Limanu, both Start-Up Nation 2022 applications were prepared this way.

What concrete difference does laser welding make on stainless versus conventional MIG/TIG welding?

+

A quote from Marian's testimonial about the first laser weld on stainless: "It's something else, it's a completely different thing." Concretely: the bead comes out fine, with no pores, with a minimal heat-affected zone, with no colour changes on the stainless steel. For products visible to the B2C client, that means there's no need for later grinding of the beads. On aluminium, the laser avoids TIG's typical problems with wind and shielding gas. For a small workshop that works many different materials, laser welding closes the capability with a single machine.

What does the "digitalization package" do for a metal-fabrication workshop?

+

The package includes industrial software for designing metal elements plus integration with the laser cutting machine. In practice, the workshop receives an order from a client, quickly draws it in the software, generates the cutting file and starts the laser with no intermediate conversion or manual adjustment steps. For a B2C workshop with small batches and one-off orders, digitalization reduces the time from request to commercial confirmation, which directly influences the conversion rate and the capacity to accept additional orders.

After the workshop, an electrostatic paint line follows · what does that mean for the ongoing relationship?

+

Electrostatic painting is the final step for Geomar's outdoor products: gates, railings, garden furniture. After laser cutting and welding, the product needs a durable protective finish. The electrostatic paint line we're set to deliver will close the workshop's capability, turning Geomar into a complete workshop from raw material to a finished product ready to install. For us, it's validation that the relationship continues naturally, each next investment building on what we delivered before.

For a similar B2C workshop, what's the minimum starting configuration with non-refundable funding?

+

The baseline recommendation based on the Geomar experience: a 6 kW economy fiber laser plus a welding machine (laser or MIG/MAG/TIG depending on the product range) plus industrial design software. For a 1–3 person B2C workshop, the configuration starts at around €50,000 total, of which the own contribution after Start-Up Nation can drop to €15,000–20,000.
