A face milling machine for large parts solves a problem many steel structure plants have: the ends and contact faces of beams, columns and thick plates must be brought flat and to size, and a universal milling machine does not have the necessary travel. LAZIRON DMX is a face milling machine for steel parts with a cross-section up to 2000 × 1500 mm and plates of 4–80 mm. A multi-tooth face mill rotates at high speed, and with each pass its teeth remove small chips, leaving a flat, smooth surface.
In the production flow, DMX works after welding and straightening, when the part already has its final shape and only needs to be brought to size on the faces that matter. It replaces manual grinding and flame adjustments, which give neither flatness nor repeatability, as well as subcontracting the milling to a machining shop. See all LAZIRON machines for H-beam and box girder fabrication, which include this machine.
• Flat, smooth surfaces: face milling produces flat faces, suitable wherever contact between parts or the finish matters. This means joints that transfer the load over the entire contact surface.
• Numerically controlled feed in both directions: horizontal table travel and milling head lift are CNC-driven, with adjustable speeds between 50 and 850 mm/min. The operator sets the parameters, and the face milling machine holds them throughout the pass.
• Long travel: 2000 mm horizontally and 1500 mm vertically, so sections up to 2000 × 1500 mm are machined in a single clamping.
• Fast material removal: the multi-tooth cutter removes a large amount of material in a short time, which makes the process efficient precisely on large parts.
• Adjustable surface texture: through feed, spindle speed (111–628 rpm) and cutter type, you get surfaces from very smooth to slightly rough, as the application requires.
• Common structural steels: Q235A, Q235B, Q345 and Q420C, i.e. the carbon and low-alloy steels most steel structures are made of.
• Compact footprint: 4.2 m × 1 m × 3 m, so the machine can be placed next to the beam line without a separate hall.
• Accurate dimensions without operator dependence: a face milling machine with CNC feed gives the same result across the whole batch, no matter who is on shift.

The process is used in three main situations: preparing surfaces before other machining, improving surface quality and bringing parts to precise dimensional tolerances. In steel structure plants, this means beam and column ends that must sit flat on base plates, contact faces of joints and thick plates that must be brought to thickness or flatness. A dedicated face milling machine performs these operations in your hall, without transport to an external shop.
The machine suits manufacturers of H-beams and box girders, of columns for halls and multi-storey buildings, of bridge structures and of heavy equipment made from thick plate. For those who do CNC milling only occasionally, through subcontractors, bringing the operation in-house shortens lead times and eliminates trips with parts weighing several tonnes. The equipment is delivered with CE-certified components, in line with the requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
Unlike a universal metal milling machine, DMX is designed for large, heavy parts that cannot be lifted onto the table of a conventional mill. For box girders whose ends you mill, see also the box girder assembly machine, and for machining edges along their length, the milling machine for long seams.
The workflow on a DMX face milling machine is simple and easy to standardize:
1. Placing the part: the part, with a section up to 2000 × 1500 mm, is clamped in front of the milling head, on the machine table.
2. Choosing the parameters: the operator selects the cutter, spindle speed (111–628 rpm) and feed (50–850 mm/min) according to the material and the required finish.
3. Positioning the head: the milling head rises along its 1500 mm vertical travel to the area to be machined.
4. Milling: the face mill rotates, and the horizontal or vertical CNC feed passes it over the surface, removing material in thin layers.
5. Checking: the surface is measured, and if a finishing pass is needed, the parameters are adjusted for a smoother texture.
6. Discharge: the milled part moves on to drilling, shot blasting or painting.
The difference from manual grinding is immediately visible at erection. A ground face looks good, but is rarely flat over the whole surface, and a contact joint with gaps transfers the load through only a few points. A face milled with CNC feed has the same flatness from one end to the other, and the base plate sits without shims and without adjustments on site.
Time matters too. Grinding a large face takes hours and tires the worker, and the result depends on them. With a face mill, the same surface is machined at a steady pace, and the operator supervises the process instead of holding a grinder for an entire shift. For a plant that delivers columns and beams every week, a face milling machine turns a workshop operation, done whenever someone gets to it, into a planned stage with a known duration.

Six technology directions we integrate turnkey: from plug & play IIoT sensors, to cobots, predictive maintenance, optical inspection, MES connectivity and custom industrial software.
See in real time how much each machine produces and how long it sits idle. We fit sensors on any equipment, new or old, and within a few hours you have the OEE dashboard on your phone. No complex wiring, no production downtime. The first concrete step toward digitalization, with ROI visible from the very first month.
Solve your labor shortage without tripling your costs. The cobot works safely alongside your people (palletizing, feeding the CNC, welding) while you recover the investment in 12-18 months. Prices 30-40% below European distributors, with installation and programming included from us.
Stop waiting for things to break. Our algorithms analyze sensor data and tell you exactly which part will fail and when, and we bring it to your production line before the breakdown. Zero unplanned downtime, zero contractual penalties, complete operational peace of mind.
Eliminate defects before they reach the customer. Our cameras inspect every part at speeds no operator can match, detecting sub-millimeter defects. They mount onto your existing line, with no modifications. Ideal if you produce for export and have strict quality clauses.
Connect your machines to your office, regardless of brand or age. Our gateway automatically translates the data from any machine into your ERP's format: no manual entry, no paper forms, no human error. The manager sees production live, the operator receives digital instructions.
Have a process that no off-the-shelf software can solve? We build custom industrial applications: from tailored SCADA panels and HMI interfaces, to production planning systems, lot traceability and automated reporting. The code is yours, it runs on your servers, with no monthly subscriptions or vendor lock-in.
