A U-rib assembly machine is the starting point for any plant that wants to produce orthotropic decks for steel bridges at a consistent quality level. The deck plate receives several U-shaped ribs, and their position and the gap between rib and plate decide how well the panel will be welded later on. LAZIRON ULZ positions the U-ribs on the deck plate and tack-welds them, with hydraulic clamping and a fit-up gap of no more than 1 mm, on base plates up to 4500 mm wide and 18000 mm long.
In the deck production flow, ULZ comes after plate cutting and rib forming and before external and internal welding of the ribs, followed by panel straightening. It replaces manual assembly with templates, mobile presses and wedges, where each rib takes time and the gap varies from one point to another. See the full range of machines for U-ribs and bridge decks, covering assembly, welding and straightening.
• Hydraulic clamping along the full length: the U-rib is pressed onto the base plate in the exact assembly position, and the contact gap between rib and plate is eliminated at the same time. The result is a fit-up gap of no more than 1 mm.
• Automatic servo-motor adjustment: the distance between the pressing units is adjusted automatically to the rib spacing, between 600 and 800 mm. Changing from one panel type to another no longer requires long manual adjustments.
• Dual-drive gantry: the gantry travels steadily along the full length of the plate, and the speed is adjusted steplessly via a frequency converter, for smooth, jerk-free assembly.
• Up to 6 ribs per panel: a U-rib assembly machine positions between 1 and 6 ribs on the same base plate, which covers the usual deck panels.
• Large, heavy plates: base plates up to 4500 × 18000 mm, with thicknesses of 12–40 mm, and a maximum load capacity of 30 t.
• Small gap, better weld: a controlled gap below 1 mm is the condition for the rib weld to have consistent penetration, without burn-through and without unwelded areas.
• Ready for the digital factory: reserved MES interfaces allow the machine to be integrated into production tracking systems.
• Less manual work: the control system takes over positioning and clamping, and people handle loading, tacking and inspection.

The main application is the orthotropic deck of a steel bridge: road, rail or pedestrian. The deck plate stiffened with U-ribs takes the traffic loads and transfers them to the main girders, and the quality of rib assembly shows directly in the bridge's fatigue life. For builders of steel bridges and for the plants that supply their panels, a U-rib assembly machine means panels with repeatable geometry that pass dimensional checks and weld inspection more easily.
The same type of stiffened panel also appears in other fields: offshore construction, wind turbines, heavy steel structures, mechanical works contractors, process plants, pressure vessels, shipbuilding and industrial equipment. This covers both road and rail infrastructure projects and shipyards or the plants working for offshore wind farms. The equipment is delivered with CE-certified components, in line with the requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
ULZ is the first step in a complete bridge construction flow. After assembly, the panel goes to the U-rib external welding machine, then to internal welding and to panel straightening. Each stage depends on the quality of the one before, and it all starts with the fit-up gap.
The flow on a U-rib assembly machine is organized along the length of the base plate, with the gantry as the central element:
1. Placing the base plate: the deck plate, up to 4500 × 18000 mm and 12–40 mm thick, is placed on the machine bed.
2. Setting the spacing: the servo motors automatically adjust the distance between the pressing units to the rib spacing in the design, between 600 and 800 mm.
3. Positioning the ribs: between 1 and 6 U-ribs, up to 320 mm high and 300–550 mm wide, are brought onto the base plate.
4. Hydraulic clamping: the gantry travels along the plate and presses each rib into its exact position, closing the contact gap to no more than 1 mm.
5. Tack welding: the clamped ribs are tacked to the base plate so that position and gap remain unchanged.
6. Panel discharge: the assembled panel moves on to external and internal rib welding.
The difference from manual assembly only shows at welding, but that is where it matters most. A variable gap between rib and plate leads to uneven penetration, and on a bridge deck this means costly repairs after non-destructive testing. When the gap stays below 1 mm along the entire length, the welding machine that follows can work with constant parameters.
Pace matters too. On an 18 m long plate, manually positioning six ribs takes a team and a lot of overhead crane time. With the gantry and automatic spacing adjustment, the operation becomes repeatable, and panel production can be planned by the day, not by estimates.

Six technology directions we integrate turnkey: from plug & play IIoT sensors, to cobots, predictive maintenance, optical inspection, MES connectivity and custom industrial software.
See in real time how much each machine produces and how long it sits idle. We fit sensors on any equipment, new or old, and within a few hours you have the OEE dashboard on your phone. No complex wiring, no production downtime. The first concrete step toward digitalization, with ROI visible from the very first month.
Solve your labor shortage without tripling your costs. The cobot works safely alongside your people (palletizing, feeding the CNC, welding) while you recover the investment in 12-18 months. Prices 30-40% below European distributors, with installation and programming included from us.
Stop waiting for things to break. Our algorithms analyze sensor data and tell you exactly which part will fail and when, and we bring it to your production line before the breakdown. Zero unplanned downtime, zero contractual penalties, complete operational peace of mind.
Eliminate defects before they reach the customer. Our cameras inspect every part at speeds no operator can match, detecting sub-millimeter defects. They mount onto your existing line, with no modifications. Ideal if you produce for export and have strict quality clauses.
Connect your machines to your office, regardless of brand or age. Our gateway automatically translates the data from any machine into your ERP's format: no manual entry, no paper forms, no human error. The manager sees production live, the operator receives digital instructions.
Have a process that no off-the-shelf software can solve? We build custom industrial applications: from tailored SCADA panels and HMI interfaces, to production planning systems, lot traceability and automated reporting. The code is yours, it runs on your servers, with no monthly subscriptions or vendor lock-in.
