Panel Nesting Yield Calculator for plywood sheets.
How many parts come out of a sheet, how many sheets you need for the order, and how much material remains scrap. The sheet is the largest variable cost line in a furniture factory, so every percentage point recovered at nesting goes straight into margin, on every order.
The standard melamine plywood sheet is 2800 x 2070 mm. Change the values if you work with another format.
For 40 parts of 600 x 400 mm you need 2 sheets, of which the last one remains partially used. The usable remainder should be logged in the offcut library, otherwise it becomes scrap.
Limits of the calculation.
The calculation is a grid placement
The result is exact for identical parts placed in rows and columns. A real optimizer, with different parts on the same sheet and shared edges, usually achieves more. Treat the figure as a guaranteed minimum.
Blade thickness matters
The default value of 4 mm covers an ordinary saw blade. On a nesting router, the cutter width is usually smaller, so more parts fit on the same sheet.
Trim margin
Sheets have edges that are not used. The default 10 mm on each side is a cautious value; if you work with consistent-quality sheets, you can reduce the margin and gain a column.
