Recyclable aluminum is often delivered in compacted bales for efficient transport, cans, profiles, sheets, and aluminum components pressed into dense bales. An baled aluminum shredding plant breaks up and shreds these bales, turning them into a loose, uniform, and clean fraction, prepared for re-melting in aluminum furnaces or for the further separation of contaminants.
A baled aluminum shredding plant is needed because compacted bales cannot be re-melted directly: their uneven density and the air trapped inside create problems at the furnace. Shredding breaks up the bale into a loose fraction with controlled density and size, optimizing the melting and the aluminum recovery yield. See the full range of recycling equipment and the solutions for metal recovery.
• Breaking up of compacted bales, breaks up dense bales into a loose fraction, processable for re-melting.
• Uniform fraction for the furnace, the controlled size and density optimize the melting in aluminum furnaces.
• Release of trapped air, breaking up the bale eliminates the trapped air, reducing oxidation and melting losses.
• Preparation for further separation, the loose fraction allows the separation of contaminants (iron, plastic) before re-melting.
• Improved melting yield, shredded aluminum melts more efficiently and with smaller losses than compacted bales.
• Robust construction, shredder sized for the high density of compacted aluminum bales.
• PLC control, automated flow with monitoring and alarm.
• Scalable, the capacity is sized for the volume of aluminum processed.

A baled aluminum shredding plant is used by aluminum smelters, by aluminum recycling centers, and by operators who receive recyclable aluminum in compacted bales. Aluminum is one of the most valuable and most recyclable metals: re-melting recycled aluminum consumes only about 5% of the energy required to produce primary aluminum from bauxite, which makes aluminum recycling extremely advantageous economically and ecologically.
The management of aluminum waste is regulated at the European level; a baled aluminum shredding plant delivered in Europe is designed in line with the requirements of Directive 2008/98/EC on waste. For integration into a complete aluminum recycling flow, see also the complete industry solutions.
The problem with compacted bales at re-melting is real and costly: the uneven density makes the inside of the bale melt differently from the outside, and the air trapped in the bale oxidizes the aluminum at the furnace temperature, generating material losses in the form of dross. Shredding eliminates these problems by breaking up the bale into a loose and uniform fraction.
The improved melting yield is the main economic benefit: shredded aluminum melts more uniformly, faster, and with smaller oxidation losses than compacted bales. At the high price of aluminum, even a small reduction in melting losses represents a significant saving per ton processed, justifying the investment in shredding.
Separating the contaminants after shredding is facilitated by the loose fraction: aluminum bales can contain contaminants (labels, iron caps, plastic), hard to separate from the compact bale. Shredding followed by magnetic separation (for iron) and by eddy current separation produces a clean aluminum fraction, with maximum value at re-melting.
The robust construction is needed for the high density of the bales: aluminum compacted into dense bales offers high resistance to being broken up. The shredder must be sized for this density, with a powerful drive system and robust components, to break up the bales efficiently without jams or accelerated wear.

1. The compacted aluminum bales are fed into the shredder.
2. The shredder breaks up the bale, freeing the aluminum from the compacted form.
3. The material is shredded into a loose fraction with controlled size.
4. The trapped air is released, reducing subsequent oxidation at melting.
5. The loose fraction can pass to contaminant separation (magnetic, eddy current).
6. The clean and uniform aluminum is prepared for re-melting in the furnace.
The PLC system coordinates the flow and signals anomalies. A correctly sized baled aluminum shredding plant breaks up the bales efficiently, producing a loose and uniform aluminum fraction that optimizes re-melting and the recovery yield.
Why can't I re-melt aluminum bales directly?
Compacted bales have uneven density and contain trapped air. At the furnace, the inside melts differently from the outside, and the trapped air oxidizes the aluminum, generating losses in the form of dross. Shredding breaks up the bale into a loose fraction that melts uniformly, with minimal losses.
How much does it improve the melting yield?
Shredded aluminum melts with significantly smaller oxidation losses than compacted bales, due to the release of the trapped air and uniform melting. At the high price of aluminum, even a reduction of a few percent in losses represents an important saving per ton, justifying the investment in shredding.
Can contaminants be separated after shredding?
Yes. The loose fraction allows the separation of contaminants: magnetic separation extracts the iron (caps, metal labels), and eddy current separation and other methods refine the aluminum fraction. This produces a clean aluminum, free of ferrous contaminants, with maximum value at re-melting in the furnace.
Can it also process other forms of aluminum besides bales?
Yes. It can also process loose aluminum (profiles, sheets, components). Shredding produces a uniform fraction from any form of aluminum, optimizing re-melting. Bales are the most difficult case due to their density; loose aluminum is processed even more easily.
