On an industrial-capacity cathode coating line, the dryer exhausts large volumes of gas carrying NMP vapor, on the order of 50,000 m³/h or more. An NMP recovery system at 50,000 m³/h is designed to capture the NMP efficiently at this flow rate, concentrate the vapor and condense the recovered NMP for reuse, without interrupting the production flow of the cathode coating line.
At flow rates of 50,000 m³/h, NMP recovery is no longer optional but mandatory both economically and legally: the volumes of evaporated solvent are large, the cost of fresh replacement NMP is significant, and environmental regulations strictly limit the release of untreated NMP into the atmosphere. An NMP recovery system at 50,000 m³/h is the core equipment of any gigafactory or industrial-scale electrode line. See the full range of battery production equipment and the integrated solutions.
• Flow rate of 50,000 m³/h, sized for industrial-capacity cathode coating lines, where the dryers exhaust large volumes of gas.
• Efficient concentration through an adsorption wheel, the zeolite or activated carbon wheel concentrates the NMP from the dilute gas into a small, hot, energy-efficient flow.
• Condensation and recovery at high purity, the concentrated NMP is condensed and purified for direct reuse in the production line.
• Heat recovery of 60% or more, advanced systems return the heat from the exhaust gas back into the dryers or into other processes in the plant.
• Clean gas returned to production, the treated gas is returned as fresh air to the production room or exhausted in line with emission standards, with 100% recirculation possible in closed-loop systems.
• Continuous 24/7 operation, designed for uninterrupted running, with scheduled maintenance carried out in segments without a full shutdown.
• PLC control with remote monitoring, critical parameters monitored in real time, with alarm and automatic shutdown on anomalies.
• Emissions compliance, exhaust gas at NMP levels below the limits of the European Industrial Emissions Directive.

An NMP recovery system at 50,000 m³/h is designed for gigafactories and high-capacity battery production lines, where the cathode dryers are tens of meters long and have a proportional exhaust airflow. On a line producing several tens of MWh of batteries per day, the volume of NMP evaporated daily represents a significant value; its recovery is the factor that makes the difference between an efficient operation and one with excessive variable costs.
NMP is a toxic volatile organic compound, classified as a substance hazardous to the environment and health; an NMP recovery system at 50,000 m³/h delivered in Europe is designed in accordance with the requirements of Directive 2010/75/EU on industrial emissions. For complete integration into the production line, see also our complete industry solutions.
Heat recovery is a significant energy saving at industrial scale: the dryer exhaust gas has a high temperature, and recovering 60% or more of this heat reduces the line's thermal consumption. At a facility running 24 hours a day, the energy saving adds to the saving from NMP recovery, reducing the double major variable cost of the cathode line.
Fully closed-loop systems recover 100% of the treated gas and return it to the production room as clean air: there is no external exhaust, no NMP emissions into the atmosphere, no cost for treating outside air. This configuration is preferred by manufacturers who want to fully eliminate dependence on emission permits.
The adsorption/desorption wheel is the heart of the system: the zeolite or activated carbon element adsorbs the NMP from the dilute gas at the inlet temperature and desorbs it concentrated at the high temperature of the regeneration zone. The principle is continuous, without changing the adsorption medium, with high recovery efficiencies and a lower specific energy consumption than direct condensation at large volumes of dilute gas.
Correct sizing is critical: undersizing means NMP lost in the exhaust gas, a direct cost and an emissions risk; oversizing means unnecessary investment and energy consumption. The design starts from the NMP concentration profile in the gas specific to the dryer, from the nominal and peak flow rate and from the purity requirements of the recovered NMP.
An NMP recovery system at 50,000 m³/h is sized based on the specific parameters of the cathode line.
| Input parameter | Impact on the system |
|---|---|
| Exhaust gas flow (m³/h) | Sizes the adsorption wheel and the condensation flow |
| NMP concentration (g/m³) | Determines the adsorption efficiency and the recovered NMP flow |
| Inlet gas temperature | Influences the adsorption efficiency and the heat recovery |
| NMP purity requirement | Determines the complexity of the final purification stage |
1. The gas with NMP vapor from the cathode dryers enters the adsorption zone of the wheel at the nominal flow rate.
2. The zeolite or activated carbon of the wheel adsorbs the NMP; the clean gas exits on the opposite side.
3. The regeneration zone of the wheel, supplied with hot gas, desorbs the concentrated NMP.
4. The gas concentrated with NMP enters the condenser, which precipitates the NMP as a liquid.
5. The liquid NMP is collected, purified and returned to the production tank.
6. The treated gas is returned to the plant or exhausted; the PLC monitors all parameters.
The wheel rotates continuously, passing alternately through the adsorption and regeneration zones. A correctly tuned system runs uninterrupted, with scheduled maintenance on wheel segments without a full production shutdown.
Why an adsorption wheel instead of direct condensation at large volumes?
At low NMP concentrations in large volumes of gas, direct condensation is energy-inefficient: the entire gas volume has to be cooled to precipitate the relatively small amount of NMP. The adsorption wheel concentrates the NMP from a large dilute flow into a small concentrated flow that can be condensed efficiently. At 50,000 m³/h, the adsorption wheel is the standard solution in the battery industry.
How much NMP does it actually recover at 50,000 m³/h?
A system with an adsorption wheel reaches recovery rates of 99% or more of the NMP present in the inlet gas. The absolute amount recovered depends on the NMP concentration in the gas specific to your dryer. On a large line, this can represent several tonnes of NMP per month returned to production.
Can it run continuously 24/7?
Yes. The adsorption wheel is designed for uninterrupted operation. Maintenance is carried out on wheel segments or during the line's scheduled shutdown periods. The PLC continuously monitors the adsorption performance and flags any drop in efficiency before it becomes a problem.
Can it return 100% of the gas to the plant without external exhaust?
Yes, in a fully closed-loop configuration. The treated gas, with an NMP concentration below the permitted limit, is returned as fresh air to the production room. This configuration completely eliminates external NMP releases and allows operation without an NMP atmospheric emission permit.
