The UZX-HWF-135 is a crawler horizontal directional drilling rig for crossings under roads, railways and water and for laying pipes and cables without digging. It pushes and pulls the drill string with 135 kN, rotates it with 3200 N·m of torque, and the rods move at up to 40 m/min.
It has a rotary head with a reducer, rod vises, a mud pump, a large cooling radiator and a control desk with operating levers. The pilot hole is tracked and steered with a locator, then enlarged with a reamer before the pipe is pulled in.

Horizontal directional drilling is done in three stages. First the rig drills an arched pilot hole under the obstacle, while the operator follows the drill head with the locator and corrects its direction. Then the hole is enlarged with a reamer to the pipe diameter. Finally the pipe is attached to the string and pulled back along the same path. The drilling mud keeps the hole open and eases the pull.
