The UZX-HWF-50 is a compact crawler horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rig for laying pipes and cables under roads, rivers, buildings and existing utilities without digging a trench. It drills a steered pilot hole, enlarges it with a reamer and pulls the pipe back.
It has a 46.2 kW engine at 2200 rpm, 2235 N·m of torque and 20 MPa hydraulics. It anchors itself hydraulically into the ground, carries a mud pump on board and is operated from a seat with a joystick. Rod loading and unloading, vise release and working speed are one-button functions, and the boost function raises pull-back force by about 20% when the pipe starts moving.

Horizontal directional drilling is done in three stages. First the rig drills an arched pilot hole under the obstacle, while the operator follows the drill head with the locator and corrects its direction. Then the hole is enlarged with a reamer to the pipe diameter. Finally the pipe is attached to the string and pulled back along the same path. The drilling mud keeps the hole open and eases the pull.

Rod loading, vise and speed are one-button functions, for about 10% more working efficiency.
Engine power adapts to the load, with about 10% lower fuel consumption.
The pull-back boost of about 20% helps start the pipe and handle overloads.

The UZX-HWF-50 is a compact rig with 2235 N·m, suited to service connections, cables, fibre optics and small pipes. The UZX-HWF-135 has 135 kN of push-pull force and 3200 N·m, for larger pipes and longer crossings. The exact length and diameter are set by the soil and the pipe.
